A Major Community Website Shutdown
By: M.Nations’ staff writer 02 September, 2010 Sadly,
the Organization of Texas Mandingo Association (Orgtema’s)
website was officially taken off the internet last week following series
of consultations among stake holders. According to the organization’s
former president, Mr. Mohammed Kamara, the community struggled with the
decision to permanently eliminate the site for days but had to it as a
last result. Orgtema website appeared on the World Wide Web during
spring of 2006. At the time, both the Mandingo community and the
Liberian/larger African communities seemed to have been in desperate
need of a new, exciting and less censoring website that was
accommodative of all views and authors, regardless of social status
and/or organizational affiliations. The website was quickly endorsed by all with numerous articles pulling in daily for publication, thus making it a major community website that was second to none in its style of information dissemination. The website attracted over half a million visitors worldwide, including many previously loyal visitors stolen from FELMAUSA, LIMANY and other websites. Orgtema is the second major community website to be closedown, first being the Wisconsin Mandingoes’ website (Wimam.net). Meanwhile, Mandingo nations’ publishers learned that the final decision to close Orgtema’s website was made by Honorable Mohammed Kamara who single handily managed the site, like most other community websites. With Mr. Kamara’s oversea UN assignment, it’s been increasingly difficult to keep the site up to date. Contrarily to the views of some community members who desired the website being left alone, dormant, Mr. Kamara who is well known by all within the Mandingo community for his forthrightness and farsightedness decided that it was time to get rid of the website and he did. Other major decisions that Mr. Kamara made included a proposal to replace current leadership of the Sanniquille Mosque project, which was welcome by all. Meanwhile, while on visit in the U.S, Mr. Kamara convened several teleconferences amongst Sanniquille community members that resulted in the final disbursement of $ 3,000.00 that was in the project’s account close to a year, to the Muslim community in Sanniqullie, to undertake most urgently needed works. |
