VOM Editorial: Yes! I agreed that Liberia is a country of law not of man, let Mary Broh and others face justice.
By: VOM Staff Writer, Alh Donzo
September 08, 2009
Over the weekend, acting Monrovia City Mayor, Mary Broh, and her guards, stormed the Benson Street Central Mosque in Monrovia where peaceful, loving Muslims had gathered to end their long day fast. Ms. Broh allegedly ordered her guards to step on the food that was being distributed just as the first person’s food was placed in his palm.

Twenty-four hours later, President Sirleaf, dissolved the Special Task Force headed by Ms. Broh. The next day, President Sirleaf, accompanied by Ms. Mary Broh, visited the scene of the attack at the Benson Street Central Mosque and apologized to the Muslims community for the Mayor’s action.

According to Frontpage Africa, Saturday’s scenario left a young lady identified as Haja Aisha severely victimized due to what eyewitnesses said resulted from a flogging she received at the hands of the acting Mayor’s guards. An FPA visit of the mosque Monday coincided with Haja being taken to a local clinic on Mechlin Street. Haja who still appeared very critical at the time was refused treatment at the clinic and was rather referred to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Sinkor by the clinic’s medical staffs.

Many Liberian Muslims living in the United States of America, Europe and Liberia, are beginning to ask themselves a question why did the Special Task Force headed by Ms. Mary Broh, showed up in the place of worship where Muslims had gathered to break fast after a long day of fasting?

Voice of Mandingo (VOM) welcomed the President’s apologized. The President acted right and we must thank the president. However, we believed that the acting Monrovia Mayor’s action against peaceful, loving Muslims warrants a thorough investigation and the full intervention of the law. The culture of impunity should stop. People should be made to pay the price for their action.

Ms. Broh should know that she isn’t exempt from obeying the law of the land. She can’t abuse the rights of others, and expect to go unpunished.

The victims of the Benson Street Central deserve justice as any other Liberian. They didn’t do anything unlawful. Letting Ms. Broh and others to go unpunished will definitely undermine the President’s previous statements, “There is no one person, group, religion or party that is better than the other” and “Liberian is a country of law not of man.”  We encourage the victims to address the issues through the court system, and also file a lawsuit against the city for the unjust attack.

On the other hand, Voice of Mandingo (VOM) is calling on President Sirleaf, to immediately release Ms. Broh of her current position pending full investigation of the attack. We believed that relieving Ms. Broh of her post as acting Monrovia City Mayor to face justice will send a positive message to others who violate the rights of peaceful, loving Liberians everyday, that regardless of their status in the government, they are not above the law of Liberia.

According to Frontpage Africa, Grand Cape Mount Junior Senator, James Momoh, (National Patriotic Party-NPP) on Tuesday, September 1, 2009, boycotted the Senate’s regular session due to what he described as Monrovia acting City Mayor’s action ‘against the Muslims’.

Sen. Momoh said, “I can’t be in session when my people are being maltreated by Madame Broh who feels she is on top of this country. She is refusing to apologize for her action and continues to drive around Monrovia in her ‘Mayor 1’ car”.

Voice of Mandingo (VOM) applauds Sen. James Momoh, for standing up for the right of the Muslims. We believed that the senator’s action is a step in the right direction and has made him a hero for all Liberians.

President Sirleaf, did you know that a young lady, Haja Aisha is currently in the Medical Hospital as a result of Ms. Broh and her guards attack? Is Ms. Broh better protected under the law than innocent young lady, Haja Aisha? Then why should Ms. Broh who attacked Haja Aisha and others are not prosecuted within the law of the land? Voice of Mandingo (VOM) believes that Ms. Broh and others should be prosecuted... or else she will do the same in the future. We want justice for the victims of the Benson Street Central Mosque attack. Again Ms. Broh should resign her position as acting Monrovia City Mayor immediately.
