FELMAUSA to Particpate in the Process of Selecting a Single Candidate
By: Nvasekie N. Konneh
September 11, 2009
The president of the National Mandingo Caucus of Liberia, Musa Bility, has officially invited FELMAUSA to participate in the process of uniting behind a single candidate in the forthcoming senate by-election scheduled for October 2009. In a letter dated September 9, 2009 which was addressed to the president and the board chairman of FELMAUSA, the president of the National Mandingo Caucus of Liberia, Musa Bilty said, “As we near the up-coming Senatorial by-election, The National Mandingo Caucus has embarked upon a drive to unite our People behind a single candidate come November 4, 2009. And in order to ensure that whatever we do in the name of peace and reconciliation, we uphold the basic tenets of democracy. We have set up a small committee comprising three members of the Mandingo Caucus and one representative each of the potential candidates. The committee is headed by Soko V. Sackor. Its Mandate is to look at the possibility of putting forward a single candidate, the finance of it, the numbers (electorate) and electibility of the person we decide to go with."

Continuing further, the Caucus' president said in his letter, "In our bid to ensure that we solicit the broadest of views from our community both in Liberia and the Diasporas, we have taken the responsibility of working with FELMAUSA, the largest diasporas organization, to ensure that the views of our brothers and sisters in the USA are fully i ntegrated into whatever decision we make in this matter. For this is the only way we can forge ahead in our drive to unite our people both in and outside Liberia. This is also in consideration of the fact that Unity cannot be achieved in Liberia without taking into consideration the position of FELMAUSA. I have to say that you have earned this reputation in such a short time since your founding."

In responding to the letter from the Caucus' president, both the president and board chairman of FELMAUSA, Richmond Konneh and Abe Kromah, have commended the National Mandingo Caucus of Liberia for reaching out to FELMAUSA to participate in the process of choosing a single candidate to represent the interests of Liberian Mandingoes at home and abroad. The leaders of FELMAUSA promise to work with the National Mandingo Caucus of Liberia in this process which shows that20we are "united around common agenda for our people.”

The three candidates20under consideration are Prof. Alhaji GV Kromah, Sam Mohammed Kromah, and Faison Jakity. Of the three candidates, Prof. Alhaji Kromah has the longest record of serving previous governments as minister and as head of ULIMO, one of the major warring factions during the Liberian civil war in the 90s. He's currently serving as a professor at the University of Liberia.

For more than 20 years, Sam Mohammed Kromah has been involved in social justice advocacy for democratic governance in Liberia. He served as president of ULAA, the largest umbrella organization of Liberians in the USA. For more than 15 years he worked for the city of Baltimore, state of Maryland, USA. During the war, he teamed up with his wife, Dr. Margaret Kromah to carry medical relief supplies to Liberia and to Liberian refugees in neighboring countries. He led ULAA delegation to the peace talk in Ghana that led to the formation of the Gyudi Bryant led interim government.

Faison Jakitay is a former LURD general who served as director of staff for the movement that played a major role in ending t he regime of Charles Taylor. He served as Assistant Minister at the Ministry of Finance in the Gyudi Bryant led interim government. Jakitay ran an unsuccessful campaign in 2005 for a Montserrado County representative seat on ALCOP ticket.
