Forum for the Advancement of Liberian
Mandingoes & their Descendants(FALMD)Press Release: September 01, 2009 Monrovia,
August 30, 2009……..The Forum for the Advancement of Liberian Mandingoes
and their descendants (FALMD) attention has been drawn to the recent
attack and act of vandalism carried out on peaceful Muslims at the
Benson Street mosque who were assembled there for some meals after
observance of their daily fast by the Acting City Mayor of Monrovia in
person of Madam Mary Broh. It can be recalled that on Saturday, August
29, 2009 at the precise hour of 7:00 PM, Madam Broh led a group of
intolerant and disgruntled individuals who wasted the Holy Month of
Ramadan breakfast food, inflicted bodily injuries on peaceful Muslims
and rained condescending insults on the Chief Imam of the Benson Street
MosqueFALMD condemn the attack on the mosque and the subsequent act of lawlessness that ensued constitute an act of aggression and hooliganism by individuals who under the pretext of being city cleaners are bent on fermenting chaos and religious tensions in post conflict Liberia. FALMD is of the conviction that the Government of Liberia will engage Madam Broh and her followers who attacked peaceful Muslims’ Mosque and its premises during this Holy Month of Ramadan and called on all peace loving Liberians to condemn this act against freedom of religion. FALMD therefore calls on President Johnson Sirleaf to urgently intervene in this matter in an attempt to put to a halt the unwholesome and provocative harassment of Liberian Muslims by the likes of Mary Broh who are in the constant habit of abusing state power by violating and trampling on the rights of other citizens. In conclusion, the Forum for the Advancement of Liberian Mandingoes and their Descendants does not understand why the acting City Mayor will choose to violate people’s constitutional rights and is calling on the Government, Civil society organizations, International human rights organizations and the Inter-Religious Council of Liberia to look into this matter for urgent redress as this kind of behavior has the propensity of undermining the substantive gains that have been made by all well meaning Liberians and other international actors in building peace and stability in post conflict Liberia SIGNED By: __________________________ Losene Kamara-Actg.
