Mandingoes & their Descendants (FALMD) Press Release: October 09, 2009 ![]() Forum for the Advancement of Liberian Mandingoes & their Descendants (FALMD) A Common cause for common people Movement Paynesville City, Double-bridge-Monrovia, Liberia-Cells: (06) +533466/ (o6) +27469 Emails:solanso07@hotmail.com/bossokorbama2005@yahoo.co.uk FALMD commences the screening of Senatorial Aspirants Ahead of Montserrado County Senatorial Bi-election slated for November 10, 2009.Monrovia, October 5, 2009……….The Forum for the Advancement of Liberian Mandingoes and their Descendants says it has commenced the public screening of various senatorial aspirants ahead of the November 10, 2009 bi-election intended to fill the vacant slot currently at the level of the Liberian Senate due to the untimely demise of the Late Hannah G. Brent; Junior Senator of Montserrado County. The grass root Pro-democracy group said it views the up-coming elections as a litmus test that will portend what is to come in 2011, and as such, deemed it only proper and befitting that civil society organizations get fully involved with community sensitization and awareness. Out of such initiatives, it has embarked on ensuring that major contenders amongst the 11 NEC certified aspirants are brought in an “open forum” to talk to Liberians – especially citizens of Montserrado County – as to why the electorates should cast their democratic franchise-votes for them in the ensuing November polls. According to a FALMD’s press release, the first aspirant to honor its invitation is Hon. Nathaniel Toe – an independent candidate who happens to be the embattled Secretary General of Cllr. Charles Brumskine’s Liberty Party. Toe, a long time student activist and Public Defender, spoke yesterday at the Barnersville Junction where FALMD normally conducts its general meetings with an audience of about 250 persons including both the Organization’s members and other interested Liberians. Having sought the indulgence of the audience, the aspirant introduced his selected theme to FALMD and the larger Mandingo Community with these words: “Long before the settlers arrived on these shores, you the Mandingoes were already in Liberia with a religion called Islam.” He went on to narrate the significant role played by King Sao Bosso alias Chief Boatswain in ensuring that the rest of the indigenous tribes honor and respect the terms and conditions of the land sale they had earlier established with freed African American slaves commonly known as settlers. The aspirant also indicated that much of the hatred and antagonism meted out against the Mandingoes by other Liberians amounts to a grand conspiracy that has long permeated this society, and as such, called for a total change of direction – only and only if Liberia is to become the beacon of hope once envisioned by its founding fathers. Addressing the question of observing Islamic holidays in Liberia, the aspirant emphasized the secular orientation and nature of Liberia and vowed to uphold this sacred secularity upon his ascendency, adding that if Christians do have holidays in Liberia than it suffices to say that Muslims as well must have holidays. When asked regarding his role as Secretary General for the Liberty in 2005 whose standard bearer according to one questioner threatened to have not only changed the name of Monrovia to Christopolis but Christianized Liberia, Hon. Toe confirmed the utterance of such statement by the learned counselor during an executive meeting. According to Hon. Toe, he shockingly but un-hesitantly rebutted the statement by informing the God sent Presidential hopeful that had he won, he was never going to be President for Christians alone but rather all Liberians – including Muslims, animists, atheists and the like. Speaking on his future role in the honorable Liberian Senate, the aspirants indicated his strong opposition to bribe-taking, one of the major factors which have led to the compromising of the rights and interests of the masses – especially in the awarding of concessions to multilateral companies and investors. He spoke about strengthening the rule of law, and used the budgetary allocation as a classic example – wherein the laws state that 25% of the National Budget must be exclusively left in the domain of the nation’s educational sector, though this has not been the case since the democratic resurgence of the UP-led government. Candidate Toe also elaborated on the role he would play as senator in ensuring that much support is directed at local farmers if the nation is to become self sufficient in the production of its staple food rice. He also indicated that, despite the current government efforts in some sectors of the country as far as development is concerned, there is still much to be done in alleviating poverty especially affecting the women and youth populations. He said for the PRS to be successful, the government must seek homegrown methods and solutions in tackling both rural and urban based poverty, while at the same time innovatively looking at housing, sanitation, education, employment among others. In closing, the aspirant praised the interim leadership and general membership of FALMD and encouraged every forward thinking Liberian to proudly embrace, and embark on, such initiatives as exemplified by FALMD. As such, he promised to always be at FALMD’s service – with the expressed intent of becoming an affiliate member. The FALMD screening exercise will continue this weekend with the senatorial aspirant of the ruling Unity Party taking the stage to address the gathering on his platform and how he hopes to achieve the set goals and objectives expressed in said manifesto. Hon. Clemenceau Urey will also be thoroughly x-rayed by both members and visitors alike so as to ascertain the practicality of his proposed plan of action, given the opportunity to serve as Junior Senator of Montserrado County –also the home of the Liberian capital, Monrovia.
