Kromah said his support for Clemenceau Urey was based on the Unity
Party’s commitment to key elements of his campaign platform.According to Mr. Kromah, the Unity Party agreed to introduce a bill in the Legislature to practicalize the provisions of Article Fourteen of the Constitution. Article 14 provides that consistent with the principle of separation of religion and state, Liberia shall establish no State Religion. It further states that no religious denomination or sect shall have any exclusive privilege or preference over the other, but shall be treated alike. Professor Kromah further revealed, it was agreed that the UP join his camp for a vigorous crusade in making the Legislature more independent and democratically functional. The Kromah-Unity Party dialogue also reached the consensus that the Unity Party support complete transparency and fairness in the conduct of Tuesday’s by-election. Mr. Kromah said the UP agreed in principle to identify with his concern that Legislators go back to their people and consult them on all legislative decisions. The disclosure was made at press conference held at Mr. Kromah’s residence in the Sophie Community in Congo Town. Meanwhile, defeated Montserrado Senatorial Candidate Nathaniel Toe has given his support to Clemenceau Urey of the ruling Unity Party for the November 24 run-off election. Mr. Toe, who contested as an independent candidate said his decision was a result of consultations with his supporters. In another development, Liberty Party defeated Senatorial candidate Darius Dillon has endorsed the candidacy of Geraldine Doe-Sherriff in the Montserrado Senatorial run-off poll. Mr. Dillon said his decision followed intense consultations with the camps of the two candidates in the run-off election. He told a press conference Friday he was caught between the scissors to support either of the candidates because of his loyalty to his Party and outside supporters. Mr. Dillon said although he is supporting the candidate of the Congress for Democratic Change, he still believes the party of George Weah is faced with organizational problem. Mr. Dillon told reporters he could not endorse the candidate of the ruling Unity Party because the UP-led government has failed to fight corruption holistically. Following the press conference, CDC Campaign Coordinator Rufus Neufville and Liberty Party Secretary General Jacob Smith have commended Dillon for the bold step taken. At the same time, the opposition National Vision Party of Liberia has called on the National Elections Commission to operate as a neutral body free of political interferences. The Political Leader of the party believes there appears some level of interference in the country’s electoral process, but did not say by whom. Dr. George Kiadii said electoral commissions in other countries are independent of their governments and there was a need for NEC to follow suit. Dr. Kiadio told Star Radio the neutrality of the Elections Commission was critical to the sustenance of the country’s emerging democracy. On the November 10 Senatorial By-election, the National Vision Party Leader said he was a bit disappointed over the conduct of the poll. According to him, the election was characterized by denial of some registered voters and the process started late in violation of the rights of the electorate. Dr. Kiadii spoke to Star Radio Friday when he presented one hundred thirty five thousand Liberian dollars to four institutions. He said the donation to the Clara Town Central Elementary & Jr. high School and the Rock International School amongst others was intended to provide education for underprivileged young Liberians. The recipients of the money commended Dr. Kiadii for the gesture and promised to use the funds for the intended purpose. |
