CDC Wins
Senatorial By-Election Courtesy: Liberian Observer November 28, 2009 MONROVIA
– Supporters of Geraldine Doe-Sheriff of the opposition Congress for
Democratic Change (CDC) took to the streets of Monrovia last night to
celebrate their victory in the just-ended senatorial by-election for
Montserrado County. The CDC’s victory has brought into question the ruling Unity Party (UP)’s chances in the 2011 general and presidential elections. Doe-Sherif is expected to take her seat next week after being certificated Tuesday, ending a month-long campaign in a hotly contested by-election that was marked by mudslinging and other invectives. With the final result of the election, the CDC has retained its Senate seat that was declared vacant after the death of Senator Hannah Brent. National Elections Commission (NEC) Chairman, James Fromayan, told reporters at a ceremony Thursday that Doe-Sherif defeated the UP, candidate Clemenceau Urey, with 58,384 votes, which he noted constitutes 56% of the total valid votes cast. As the results were being announced, a senior UP member walked out of the hall. The results were based on data collected from all 968 polling centers across Montserrado County. The NEC Chairman told reporters that out of the total number of valid votes cast, Mr. Urey obtained a total of 45,864 votes, constituting 44% of valid votes cast. He added that the total of 105,800 votes cast during the election accounted for 22.36% of the 473,193 voting population of the county. Out of total votes cast, Fromoyan said, 104,248 votes were recorded as valid while 1,552 votes were declared invalid during the tallying process. Based on the results, the NEC announced Doe-Sherif winner of the Senatorial by-election. Fromayan hailed the Government of Liberia, local and international partners, including United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) for their high level of support and participation in the election. He also thanked voters of Montserrado County for turning out and participating in the by-election, especially during the just-ended run-off electoral process. Meanwhile, the NEC Chairman said his Commission will on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 officially certificate Sherif as the new junior senator of Montserrado County, with a population of over one million people. Meanwhile, the newly elected senator of Montserrado County has welcomed the results from the NEC. Speaking minutes after the results were announced, the CDC candidate said she was pleased with the results of the election. She said though there had been errors during the first round of the process, the CDC accepts the result on grounds that “we are all Liberians.” When quizzed by our reporters as to her first task as a senator at the 52nd National Legislature, Sheriff stated that two major bills were on her desk – making corruption a non-bailable offense in Liberia and an education empowerment bill. The Senator-elect described the two bills as vital to the progress and development of Liberia. “Corruption is eating Liberia, and I am going to make sure that corruption becomes an unbailable offence in the country,” she declared. Regarding the education empowerment bill, Sheriff stressed the importance of youth educational empowerment in the county, which, she said, should give the youth the opportunity to go to school. However, Eugene Nagbe, Secretary General of the CDC, in an interview with pressmen at the conference, said that his party’s victory did not come as a surprise and that the election was a referendum on the policies of the current government. “I think it’s time for the ruling Unity Party to go back to the drawing board and reassess some of these policies and come out with something better,” Nagbe said. Up to press time yesterday, there was no word from the defeated candidate Clemenceau Urey, but it was observed by our reporters that one of the stalwarts of the party in the person of James Davies was seen walking out of NEC compound while the results were being announced. The by-election was held in order to find a replacement for the late Montserrado County Senator, Hannah Brent, who died in August this year. |
