Muslim Congress Alum and Former Students Association in the USA Elects new code of Officers:
By Musa Willie
18 May, 2010

At a general meeting on Sunday May 9, 2010, the Muslim Congress Alum and Former Students Association in the USA elected a new code of officers to steer the affairs of the association for two years. The new administration is to help put in place a comprehensive mechanism that will move the association in the right direction. The association which was founded in 2005 by former students and alums in the US had been continuously steered by an Ad-hoc committee chaired by Kafumba Kenneh and a team of diligent alums. The purpose of the association is to help the Muslim Congress high school in Liberia and to enhance communication and interaction among its members in the diasporas and the local Muslim congress community in Liberia.

Since it establishment, the association has provided many financial assistances to the Muslim Congress High School of Liberia and has earmarked other potential programs and projects for the coming years. In 2006, the association contributed $5000 to the reconstruction project of the Muslim Congress High School in Liberia. The money according to the Muslim Congress officials was used to facilitate their trip to the Middle East in soliciting fund for the reconstruction of the school. It can be recalled that in October 2005 some men, armed with sticks, knives and broken bottles burned down the Muslim Congress High School in central Monrovia, the only Islamic high school in the city. They also tried relentlessly (due to the intervention of peacekeepers) to burn down the two main mosques in central Monrovia. In July of 2009 the association donated $525 to the Muslim Congress community in Liberia for a prayer service held in tribute to some of the school’s deceased members. In April 2010, the association also made a cash donation of $600 to the Muslim Congress high school for students who will be sitting the 2010 West African Examination Council (WAEC).

The meeting which was held at Ms. Miatta Wahab’s residence in Morton PA, brought together cross section of former students and alums from New York, New Jersey and other parts of the US. Everyone expressed the urgent desire to put a constructive leadership structure in place to enable the association function effectively. Due to the persistent calls from the members, an executive leadership was constituted. At the meeting, the body unanimously elected the following officials based on their past commitment and dedication to the association to serve in their respective capacity for two years. Those elected as interim leaders are:

1. Kafumba Kenneh…………………..President
2. Miatta Abdul Wahab………………Vice President
3. Musa Willie………………………..Secretary
4. Fatumata Sillah…………………….Treasurer
5. Amos Kiadi………………………..Financial Secretary

Muctar Sheriff, a 1985 alum emphasized the need for a leadership which have demonstrated a capacity of integrity that can be characterized as responsible and committed. “Since Kafumba and his team have earned a reputation of trust and commitment, it is a good thing for us to keep them in the position of authority for now” Muctar said. A view which resonated with everyone in attendance and subsequently led to the unanimity of the members’ decision.

For his part, the newly elected president Kafumba Kenneh thanked the members for the unanimous vote of confidence and assured them that he will do all in his capacity to foster the mission of the association. He humbly asked the members to support his administration to ensuring lasting success within the association. “I look forward to us working together in moving this association forward” said Kafumba. To foster communication within the association, he announced that his administration will be setting up regional representatives within major states in the US. “My first priority will be states with high concentration of former students and alums of Muslim Congress, like New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey”. Kafumba stated.

In closing, MB Sheriff offered prayers for the members and invoked Allah’s blessing on the association. He also offered prayers for Ms. Miatta Wahab who enormous generosity and hospitality helped made the meeting a success. Miatta’s delicious African and Pakistani dishes provided the unique atmosphere under which a successful meeting was held. It is said to control a man’s mind, you must first control his belly, and she surely did. Bravo! Miatta

The next general meeting of the association will be at the president’s residence on june 6 2010.
