Ethnic tension in Liberia had been nonexistent or at least dormant until Samuel K. Doe assumed the presidency. Doe’s Government was dominated by his kinsmen, the Krahns, and manifestly supported by the Mandingo tribe. Perhaps as a consequence of the rivalry between president Doe and Thomas Quinworkpa, the two remaining strong men of the then People’s Redemption Council (PRC) which toppled the status quo of the True Whig Party, the Civil War, waged by the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) under the leadership of Charles Ghankay Taylor, was conducted initially on tribal lines. The compound of the General Auditing Commission resulted in bedlam on Saturday bringing abject fears in employees. It came about when some men posting as agents of the National Security Agency trooped into the building to force the arrest of the without a write of arrest. The overwhelming growing numbers of intellectuals within our community give us reasons to believe that our community is capable of producing an actionable leadership that can positively impact the Liberian Mandingos and the Liberian community at large, both in Liberia and around the world.
But the million dollars question is, HOW DO WE MAKE THIS POSSIBLE AND WHEN? My answer to these questions is as simple as A.B.C; (A) AIMS; In my view, if our AIMS and objectives can be unequivocally presented, and we remain unconfined and unimpeded by self-righteousness, greediness and selfishness, we would be able to engender a productive leadership that we envision as Liberian Mandingoes. HIV-Positive Liberians Fight Workplace Discrimination

HIV-positive people in Liberia say they are being discriminated against in the workplace. AIDS counselors say that is adding to depression and isolation. In a country where official unemployment tops 80 percent, it is hard for anyone in Liberia to find a job. But people who are HIV-positive say it is even more difficult for them because many employers refuse to hire people who have the virus that causes AIDS. Read detail

Liberian President, Ellen Sirleaf Johnson is urging countries to make free health care available to the poor. The Liberian president told ministers attending the World Health Assembly that too many people in developing countries are suffering from ill health and are dying because they cannot get the care they need.

Guinea's Political Parties Debate Deposit to Run in Next Month's Presidential Poll

Political parties in Guinea are concerned that the high cost of a proposed candidate registration deposit for next month's presidential elections may exclude some candidates.
Guinea's independent electoral commission met with political parties this week to debate a proposed $150,000 registration deposit for candidates to run in the presidential poll planned for June 27. After the election, the deposit is typically returned to candidates who receive at least five percent of the vote, but some in Guinea are concerned that the proposed amount is too expensive and will exclude smaller, less-moneyed political parties from the race. Ellen Ready For Nimba Land Dispute

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has promised to act on the Nimba Land Dispute when recommendations of the Musa Bility Committee are presented to her this week. The Bility Committee Report, amongst other things, recommends that US$1.1million be allocated to the current illegal occupants of properties belonging to the Mandingoes in Nimba County. The Committee, amongst other things, also recommends that the amount be distributed based on the value of properties illegally constructed on the properties of the Mandiogoes, situated in major towns and villages in Nimba County. So many of you came out and celebrated with us yesterday that we can’t even begin to list your names due to space limitation. Nevertheless, we will forever remember your names and faces as a result of personal interactions that we had with each of you on arrival and departure from the party venue. Monrovia, May 10, 2010………….Public Works Minister Atty. Samuel Kofi Woods, II says reforms in government are intended to improve service delivery rather than hurt people and called on Liberians to get ready in embracing the new Public Works which will emerge following the current trends of reform at the Ministry.The Public Works Minister made these comments during the opening of a two-day intensive Institutional Development retreat organized by the MPW to develop a Strategic Planning Framework for the next five years.
The retreat held at the Catholic Pastoral Retreat Center in Gbarnga City, Bong County brought together all Senior Staff of the Ministry of Public Works, who participated in the review of the Institution’s mandates, vision, mission and programmes. Read detail
UL Revokes Five ‘Play-Play’ Degrees

Authorities at the University of Liberia ( U.L), Friday revoked five “play play degrees” (degrees acquired by graduates through fraudulent means) from graduates of the December 16, 2009 class.
Responding to a question posed by a Journalists from this paper at a jam packed press conference, Prof. Dr. Julius Sawalo Nelson, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs said investigation into the matter is partly completed, noting; “ we found out that after the graduation, there were students who presented records for the clearance process that were not authentic.”Prof. Dr. Nelson; “…In all our findings, there are five students that we managed to discover in that process. UK court jails Gambian brothers for dealing drugs

A court in Portsmouth, United Kingdom has jailed two Gambian brothers after they were found guilty of dealing in cocaine and other drugs. According to Portsmouth’s ‘The News’, the two brothers, who entered England in 2007, tried to deny they were related after their drug dealing den was uncovered.“When police raided a one-bedroom flat in Goodwood Road, Southsea, in October last year they found £2,000 of cocaine hidden in jars in the kitchen and £1,700 worth of cannabis stuffed inside a bongo drum,” the paper reported. According to the paper, Lamin Darbo tried to claim he had been forced to sell cocaine while his younger brother Bubacarr denied they were related and said he had no involvement in the drugs. The Former Assistant Minister for Information Services Mr. Abu Kamara has resumed duties at the Liberia’s permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
Mr. Kamara now serves as the Minister counselor for Press and Public Affairs at the Liberia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
In a brief chat with Felmausa’s Leadership Mr. Kamara said he takes this assignment very seriously because according to him, the public service of any kind demands dedication and commitment bearing in mind that it is one’s patriotic duty to serve whenever called upon, and to do so with sense of responsibility.
