UL Revokes Five ‘Play-Play’ Degrees

Authorities at the University of Liberia ( U.L), Friday revoked five “play play degrees” (degrees acquired by graduates through fraudulent means) from graduates of the December 16, 2009 class.
Responding to a question posed by a Journalists from this paper at a jam packed press conference, Prof. Dr. Julius Sawalo Nelson, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs said investigation into the matter is partly completed, noting; “ we found out that after the graduation, there were students who presented records for the clearance process that were not authentic.”Prof. Dr. Nelson; “…In all our findings, there are five students that we managed to discover in that process. We have discussed their records and we have gone to the exercise to revoke their degrees.” The U.L authority noted contrary to media reports that students involved were from the Business College, degrees which are revoked he said, were from students who graduated from the science college stressing that names of those students will not be reveled to the press or the public.

“…Names?, we will not provide [their names] for you that is the university’s business and we choose not to give you their names because of all their privacy rights that you people from the press try to proclaim from time to time...We in the university have the information for our records and those students will be inform appropriately,” he said.
Prof. Nelson also said that they have reverted to the decision of suspending the affected students for four academics years before they could be allowed to return to the university to complete their curses.
“…And is because this is the first time we have lay hand on students of such group so we are been lenient by suspending them for four years, if any body else try it again, we will put their names in the papers and those would be expelled… If there were any human being involved from this campus, not only that they would be dismissed, but we were going to prosecute them, ”Prof. D. Ansu Sonii, V. P for administration strictly stated.

Also speaking, Prof. Wilson Tarpeh, V.P for fiscal affairs disclosed that the university has brought a machine costing over US$200,000 correct the examination appears of students while Dr. S. Momolu Gatewah , V.P for university relations announcements the introduction of I.D. cards to identify legal students from illegal ones.
