MONROVIA, The final deliberation and gathering of opinions on the much talked about Threshold Bill currently before members of the National Legislature will today, Wednesday, May 27, 2009, be concluded by the Liberian Senate with the holding of a major public hearing on the passage of the Bill.

The Senate on yesterday instructed its Committee on Internal Affairs, Governance and Reconciliation to conduct a major public hearing aimed at soliciting views from both opinion leaders and civil society organizations in the country so as to put the Senate in a suitable condition in passing the Bill that would be accepted by its citizenry.

The conduct of the public latest hearings came as a result of a disagreement among senators, including Senator Blamo Nelson of Grand Kru County who had strongly differed with his fellow lawmakers Tuesday on the 40,000 per constituency as passed by the House of Representatives last week.
The hearing will also focus on the Referendum and Boundary Harmonization Bills, both of which are also before the Legislature. They centered on the terms of the President of the Republic of Liberia and the nine-year office term for senior senators, among others.

Today's hearing will bring together several Liberian constitutional and legal scholars as well as heads of civil society organizations, opinion leaders, politicians, among others.
Cogent information gathered by the Senate committee today will be placed in the committee report to Plenary tomorrow at which time the Bill will be debated for possible passage into law on Thursday May 28, 2009.

Those invited for today's hearing include opposition Liberty Party former standard bearer, Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine; Professor Alhaji G. V. Kromah, former standard bearer of All Liberian Coalition Party (ALCOP); and the former president of the erstwhile Interim Government of National Unity (IGNU) and Chairman of the Governance Commission, Dr. Amos Claudius Sawyer.

The others include Executive Director of Catholic Justice and Peace Commission (JPC), Cllr. J. Augustine Toe; former National Security Advisor Lewis Brown; and the president of the Liberian National Bar Association and Law Professor Marcus Jones.

The Threshold Bill hearing will see the participation of Internal Affairs Minister Ambulai Johnson; Chairman of National Elections Commission (NEC) and former lecturer of Political Science at the University of Liberia, James Flomoyan; the Executive Director of Christian Association of the Blind, Mr. Beyan Kota; and the Minister of Gender and Development, Madam Varbah Gayflor

Also on the list for the hearing are Cllr. Pearl Brown Bull, Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and former member of the Constitution Review Committee; Sheik Kafumba Konneh, Secretary General of the National Muslim Council of Liberia and commissioner of the TRC; as well as traditional chiefs from across the political sub-divisions of the country.

They are also expected to propose a figure to the Committee to be used in passing the Bill in the interest of the country and its citizens.
Suggestions or recommendations received from the invited guests at the end of the hearing will set the basis for the Senate to decide as to whether or not to concur with the Lower House on the 40,000 per constituency threshold.
