For Not 'Fetching Water' for Domestic
Use, Lawmaker Wife Detain Driver for 72 Hrs Courtesy: Liberia observer 20 June, 2010 Sinoe County District #2 Representative in the Lower House of the National Legislature, Timothy Davies, and his wife, Mona, have reportedly brutalized the lawmaker's driver for not fetching water for their domestic use. Driver Chemon Jackitay, alias 'Bill', told the Daily Observer over the weekend that Rep. Davies' wife, Mona, at her husband's Roberts Field Highway Community residence ordered him to fetch water for their domestic use, something, the driver said, he rejected on grounds that he was not employed to carry out domestic functions. According to Bill, owing to his refusal to comply with the order of the lawmaker's wife, she (Mona) branded him a 'Mandingo man', who often behaved that way. Bill further explained that his characterization by the Sinoe County legislator's wife, Mona, of being a Mandingo man annoyed him, thus making him to react with these words: “Yes, I am a Mandingo man, I am stupid.” Bill further narrated that his reaction prompted Mrs. Davies to order some neighbors to flog him. He further quoted his attackers as saying, “We will jail you for scandalizing Honorable Davies' name and your harsh approach to his wife.” Bill, who said he had not been paid by lawmaker Davies for the past six months, further narrated that he often encountered humiliation at the hands of lawmaker Davies, especially when he (Bill) called for payment of his half-year accumulated salaries. “I am working daily as a driver, but I have not received my salaries for the past six months,” he explained in a sad mood. According to Bill, he earns US$50.00 per month even though the government pays each of its civil servants, of which he is a part, US$70.00 monthly. Bill further explained that since his employment with lawmaker Davies in September 2008, his salary checks were often received by his Boss (lawmaker Davies) who often cashes the checks and deducts US$20.00 from the US$70. “After the US$20 deduction, the lawmaker gives me US$50.00,” driver Bill explained. The Finance Ministry recently unveiled plans to devise ways in which the staff of the National Legislature will receive their just salaries through the bank, but little is known as to whether the plan is being implemented. The driver said at the moment, his children and other dependants were finding it extremely difficult to survive without money to buy food and meet other family obligations as his money had not been released to him for six months. Multiple eyewitnesses confirmed that Bill was ordered flogged by lawmaker Davies' wife, Mona. According to the eyewitness, on the order of the lawmaker's wife, Bill was dragged to Depot #7 of the Liberia National Police situated along the Monrovia-Roberts Field Highway where he was detained for three days on the alleged order of lawmaker Davis. After spending three days in detention, lawmaker Davies went to the station and ordered the police to release driver Bill from further detention, eyewitnesses further explained. When contacted on Monday, May 24, 2010 by the Daily Observer for comment at his Capitol Building office, lawmaker Davies denied that his wife had ordered the brutalization of his driver. He, however, admitted ordering police officers assigned with depot #7 of the LNP along the Monrovia- Roberts Field Highway to arrest driver Bill for which the driver was arrested and detained in police cell for three days. The commander of the depot could not be reached for his reaction on the lawmaker's assertion. Rep. Davies further said when Bill was sent by his wife, (Mona) to go and fetch water for the home, he protested and refused to cooperate. “This, of course, did not go down well with her so she asked him, 'why are you behaving like a Mandingo man?'” said the legislator. Rep. Davies: “This statement prompted Bill to respond angrily by saying. 'I am a dam Mandingo man, I am stupid'. As a result of Bill's response, the lady ordered his flogging,” Rep. Davies said. Earlier, according to the lawmaker, Bill had accused him of meting out ill-treatment against him (Bill). Rep. Davies said driver Bill had accused him of keeping him hungry all day long; keeping him on the job from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. But Davies maintained that all those allegations by his driver against him were far from truth. |
