1Goal Ambassador George Weah,
Advocates for Children Education: Marking International Day of African
Child By: Office Staff of Amb. George M. Weah Today
is a memorial period in the history of the world. It was on this same
day, 34 years ago, when poor black South African school children took to
the streets to demand a better education. Hundreds of those children
were brutally murdered and many more were gravely wounded. It is upon
their honor that I, George Manneh Weah, former UNICEF Ambassador joined
with a few of the world’s most celebrated footballers to launch the
1GOAL campaign. As a 1GOAL Ambassador, I want to use this opportunity to call upon all soccer fans around the world to support our cause especially as the World Cup is going on in South Africa. Let the memory of those poor South African children motivate us to pledge to send every African child to school. I am familiar with the consequences of not having equal access to good quality education, and as a result, have experienced some level of condemnation by peers. I do not want to see our African children suffer the same fate I experienced. Despite the odds, I stand today with the ability to count myself among the lucky few who have been afforded a good education in the United States. This education has allowed me to view things from a broader and more informed perspective. I grew up as a poor child in some of the worst slums in Africa so my own life experiences have been the driving force in my dedication to this cause. The issue of child poverty and unequal access to education touches my heart dearly and as a result, I want to give the children of Africa a fair and equal opportunity to become who they are destined to be. I am calling upon all governments in Africa and around the world, to support our 1GOAL campaign, to provide educational opportunities for every child. Governments must be the main guarantor and implementer of educational programs for children in our society. In my native land Liberia for example, about 50% of our population is below 15 years old and the government of Liberia has yet to address this critical issue of educating our youths in preparation for their roles as future leaders. The international community has continuously been instrumental in providing aid for African children and I want to use this opportunity to thank them for their support because it is imperative that our children’s education become a priority. On this great day, let us stand on the hopes, dreams and aspirations of the thousands of South African children who took to the streets demanding equality and access to education. I George Manneh Weah pledge to play an active role in educating the children of Africa and I ask you to join me in this worthy cause. It is time to PUT OUR CHILDREN FIRST and make education a RIGHT instead of a PRIVILEGE. Thank You. Office Staff of Amb. George M. Weah georgeweah.officestaff@gmail.com CDC!
