Man Takes Own Life after Killing Wife By: Marcus N. Malayea Courtesy: Liberian Observer June 03, 2009 BONG COUNTY, Police in the central provincial town of Gbarnga are investigating the death of one Jonathan Sackie and his wife Fatu Sackie of Moses Karfiah Town in Yellequelleh District Bong Couny. According to the Chief of the Crime Services Division of the Bong County Police Detachment, Inspector Alvin James, circumstances leading to the death of the two persons had not been established by police. He, however, disclosed that Jonathan Sackie took away his life after killing his wife with a single barrel gun. Quoting eyewitnesses' accounts, Inspector James said Jonathan shot and killed his wife at about 9:00 a.m. on Friday, May 29, 2009 when traders from the nearby market of Taylor Town were returning home. He added that the victim and her two friends were also on their way to the same market. Inspector James disclosed that the killer might have hidden in the bush along the road to accomplish his horrible act. According to the Inspector, the woman was shot at close range as, according to him, all the pellets entered her right arm. The CSD commander said that after Jonathan had shot and killed his wife, the incident was reported to the townspeople by the two other colleagues who were with Fatu. Inspector James told the Daily Observer that Jonathan and his wife Fatu had lived together for the past 15 years and were blessed with five children. Inspector James quoted another eyewitness account as saying that Jonathan had often accused his wife of infidelity. Jonathan, according to the Police Commander, also exploded his head with a bullet from his single barrel gun after realizing that he had killed his wife. When the Daily Observer spoke to John Flomo, an eyewitness and one of deceased friends who were with her at the time of the shooting, it was revealed that Jonathan Sackie had always accused his wife of having an affair with another man. “The man was jealous like pigeon,” Flomo told the Observer. He further told the Daily Observer that Jonathan was a regular local palm wine producer, adding that he had given his wife a tin of fresh wine to take to the Taylor Town Market to sell and buy foodstuff for the day's meal. The eyewitness added that Jonathan, besides the production of palm wine was also a hunter and that on the day of the incident, Jonathan told her, “Today is your last day of visiting the market.” According to Flomo, after Jonathan's wife took off for the market, he (Jonathan) instructed one of his sons to bring him his single barrel gun along with three cartridges so that he could go on his regular hunting expedition. Apparently, Jonathan was irritated when he saw his wife walking with John Flomo to the market. Another account has it that Jonathan always accused his wife of using the market as a pretext for meeting her boyfriend. Police investigation continues into the incident. |
