President elect, Mohammed Dukuly Celebrates his Victory with bad precedent!
By:Volunteer reporter
July 07, 2009
To enter the debate hall on Friday July 3, 2009, everyone, including the candidates, was required to pay $10.00. No one but candidate Mohammed Dukuly thought he shouldn't have to pay any money to enter. Candidate Dukuly's refusal to pay the $10.00 caused some commotion at the gate where he was told that everyone including President Richmond Konneh had paid and he was no exception. Even with this information candidate Dukuly still refused to pay the $10.00.

The situation was only rescued from degenerating into a bigger commotion when one of his supporters paid the money. He was lectured by the gatekeepers that this gate intake was intended for FELMAUSA's coffer and it is one of the strategies in place to raise funds for the organization and without such FELMAUSA cannot function as an organization. Even with this lecture candidate Dukuly was still not willing to pay the money until the $10.00 was paid by one of his supporters. Why would a man running to be president of FELMAUSA not be willing to support the organization financially? That was the question many were asking.

While the above incidence was during the debate when Mohammed Dukuly was still a candidate, the second instance of Dukuly's refusal to pay at the gate happened when he was already the declared winner of the just ended election. During the debate on Friday night, one thing Dukuly's opponents kept pounding him for was his refusal to contribute to FELMAUSA's scholarship fund drive. By refusing to pay to the FELMAUSA's scholarship fund drive Dukuly was considered as being irresponsible by his opponents. Candidate Dukuly's response to such charges was that he couldn't contribute to the fund drive because of lack of accountability on the part of the Richmond Konneh's administration. This charge of irresponsibility on the part of candidate Dukuly and counter-charge of lack of accountability on the part of the Richmond Konneh's administration was a recurring terms through most of the debate.

But it seems like when it comes to spending money to support FELMAUSA, Mohammed Dukuly has problem. This was the case even after he was overwhelmingly elected as president of FELMAUSA on July 4, 2009. At the dance in the night the scene of Friday night was repeated. When President Elect Mohammed Dukuly arrived at the gate and was told that the door charge was $20.00, he refused to pay. The situation degenerated into another commotion with one Dukuly supporters, Losene Jabateh of Bronx New York insulting the gate keepers accusing them of jealousy. This situation was again rescued from becoming a big commotion when one of Dukuly's supporters paid the $20.00 gate fee on his behavior.

The refusal of the candidate to pay on these two occasions has raised eyebrow among FELMAUSA's members. Many are questioning whether Mohammed Dukuly is responsible enough. According to one of the gate keepers who spoke on condition of anonymity, "The President Elect has set very bad examples on these two ocassions." According to this person, "How will he refuse to support FELMAUSA when he's now the president?" The question on the minds of many people now is if President-Elect Dukuly find it difficult to pay $10.00 and $20.00 to support FELMAUSA what is he going to do when he may be required to pay from time to time $100.00 to $200.00 for FELMAUSA? To be a leader of any organization at the community level is a huge sacrifice of time, energy and money and your own very personal money as well. Is President Dukuly ready for this? Well, we will see but the bad examples he has set so far may be an indication that Mohammed Dukuly will run his administration on OPM (other people’s money) while holding tight to his own.
