  Ambassador Kamara consults the NGO community

New York Friday 3, February,2012, the Permanent Representative of Liberia to the United Nations Ambassador Major Kamara has had a meeting with the New York -based Committee on the Status of Women (CSW) non-governmental organizations community in preparation for the fifty-six session of the Commission on the Status of Women which will be held at the United Nations headquarters in New York from the 27 February to 9 March 2012.

Ambassador Kamara who was elected last year as the chair of the Bureau to steer the affairs of the Commission on the Status of Women said she was pleased to have been given the opportunity to serve on such an important Bureau of the world body which goals and objectives are to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women throughout the world.

She told the representatives of the NGO community that the Bureau under her leadership will work hard to up hold the tradition of encouraging their participation and to have a constructive and close relationship with non-governmental organizations in pursuit of goals and objectives centered around the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The Liberian diplomat urged the NGOs to contribute meaningfully during the forthcoming session and its follow-up in order to achieve tangible results. “ In our preparations for and during the session, we must never lose sight of the purpose of our work. In this spirit, I look forward to a very dynamic and result-oriented session after which hopefully, we will be able to say that we rose to the occasion and met or exceeded the highest expectations”
Ambassador Kamara, praised the newly elected Chair of the New York NGO committee on the Status of Women for her commitment and dedication which according to her is infusing energy into all of the committee’s activities in relation to the session of the Commission.

She said although the NGO Committee on the Status of Women is a volunteer- based organization funded largely by donations and contributions, the personal time, energy and the ideas and other efforts put into use by members and participants need to be appreciated. “ I commend you on your work , I see your potential to channel the experience and input of NGOs working in all regions to decision-makers and institution of governance”, she added.

Touching on the organizational and the procedural issues of the session, Ambassador Kamara informed the NGOs community that preference will be given to those participants that will be speaking mainly on the priority theme, thus “ The empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development and current challenges” . She pointed out that several side-events aimed at strengthening the Commission’s work would be held during the session

Meanwhile, the representatives of the NGO community have expressed gratitude to the Chair and the members of the Bureau of the Commission on the Status of Women for giving them the opportunity to participate in the forthcoming session and expressed readiness to contribute effectively towards the realization of the set goals.
