Who becomes FELMAUSA’s next President and Board Chairman
By: Independent Contributor
03 August, 2010

FELMAUSA’s fourth Annual Convention just came to an end in Philadelphia, PA with some critical questions unanswered. As we all know, the next convention is in the countdown status, and these key questions remain unanswered. Where will the next convention be held? Will President Mohamed Dukuly rerun? Who are other potential candidates for the Presidency and the Chairmanship of the Board of Directors?

Where will the next convention be held?

According to the survey conducted so-far, many favor the convention to be held in the Washington, DC metro areas next year. The President of the Washington DC Liberian Mandingo Association (WALIMA) Mr. Kalifala S. Donzo has expressed his interest in hosting the 2011 FELMAUSA convention; however, it is  unconfirmed weather the Executive Leadership of the Federation will approve that. New York/ New Jersey were another option but, due to parking problems in New York, NYC was ruled out. As for New Jersey; the experience from the Inauguration of the current leadership was not satisfactory thereby leaving the Washington D.C. area with the most preference. Some are advocating that Philadelphia remain the host for the convention for now. Nevertheless, critics are saying that, other Chapters have to experience the convention spirit.

Will President Mohamed Dukuly rerun?

President Mohamed Dukuly’s popularity within the FELMAUSA community has dramatically dropped compared to his popularity close to the last year convention.

It is recalled that this website carried an article right before the Convention which suggested that the President Hon. Mohamed Dukuly was prepared to hand in his resignation during the convention; however, he denied that report in an interview granted to the FELMAUSA Mandingo reporter Lassana Bamba. During this interview, President Dukuly categorically denied any iota of truth in that report. But, what the President could not do was to elaborate on the reasons cited in the article as the cause for his resignation. The article referred to the pressure from the Chairman of the Board of Directors Hon. Abe Kromah as the reasons behind the presumed resignation of Mr. Dukuly. When asked if  he is going to rerun, Mr. Dukuly answered by saying that he believes in democracy and giving others the opportunity to serve their community. This answer implied that he was not interested in a re run. Mr. Bamba cleverly rephrased the question and put it to the president this time around he answered by saying that he will submit to the wishes of the people. It is therefore not clear as of now if he will rerun. It is remembered that the former president of FELMAUSA Hon. Richmond Mohamed Konneh was entangled in similar indecisiveness prior to the election that brought Mr. Dukuly to the leadership of FELMAUSA. Mr. Konneh, under pressure from the same Board of directors announced that he would not rerun. But, under pressures from some community members who carried petition around for signatures; Mr. Konneh decided to rerun as the result he suffered a humiliating defeat in Minnesota.

The tenure of the Chairman of the Board of Directors Hon. Abe Kromah will end. He will not be qualified to rerun as the constitution of FELMAUSA provided that no elected official shall serve more than two consecutive terms. As of now there has been no indication as to when an Election Commission will be announced by President Dukuly. Therefore candidates to fill these key positions in FELMAUSA are yet to come forth. However; speaking to some inner circle individuals in the organization has suggested some favorite names which could emerge for the forth coming elections. Some are Saying that Famod Konneh of New York could make a good Board Chairman. Mr. Konneh who is currently the President of the New York Mandingo Association (ONYMA) he is also the Chaplain of the Board of Directors. Famod has gained the respect and admiration of his colleagues on the FELMAUSA Board largely due to his act of vocal and guileless approach to issues. During the Constitution Debate at the just ended convention, Mr. Konneh proved to be a very influential debater. At a point he was jokingly refered to by the Chairman of the Constitution Committee as a very good sales man. Another name that keep coming up is that of Ishmael Komara of Minnesota. Mr. Komara was the President of the Minnesota Mandingo Association during the formation era of FELMAUSA. During those deliberations Mr. Komara was known for his pressing of issues and eloquence in the presentations of his ideas. He became the first Ways and Means Committee chairman of FELMAUSA a position he is serving till now. Another perceived Potential candidate for this all important post in FELMAUSA is Musa Fofana of Atlanta. Mr. Fofana is currently the Secretary of the FELMAUSA Board of Directors. Mr. Fofana is known as the Action man of FELMAUSA. He served as Special Presidential Envoy during the Richmond administration, while serving that post the organization experienced a high level of outreach efforts through his instrumentality, when President Mohamed Richmond Konneh left office, Mr. Fofana ended up on the Board where he was elected as Secretary. His effectiveness gains him the popularity he enjoys today on that august body. He is known for his insistence on playing by the book and accountability.

None of these three gentlemen has expressed any interest weather privately or publicly but these analyses were based on public opinion about them based on their commitment to the organization.

As for the Presidency, Public impressions have it that Ishmael Komara  of Minnesota could make a good and productive President. Based on what he has done in New York, Mr. Famod Konneh  is regarded as a brilliant motivational figure. His presidency would elevate FELMAUSA to a much more vibrant organization. Musa Fofana is also a favorite for the top post. He has proven to be resourceful. Some think he could make FELMAUSA more serviceable. Nevertheless; the current Vice President for Administration Hon. Mohamed Kromah of New York has expressed his desire to run for the presidency, but many think his leadership style is not healthy for FELMAUSA. He is more of a celebrity kind of person than a deliverable one. FELMAUSA been a serviceable entity cannot afford that kind of personality as a leader. It is not known yet as to the intention of Mamadee Sesay of Minessota. He was the Vice President for Operations during the Richmond administration. He is currently the Chairman of the Educational Committee. He unsuccessfully contested for the presidency during the last election. It is not clear if he is going to give it another shot.

To be continued….
