Celebration in Nimba County, Muslims in Liberia are asked to brace
themselves as the Holy Month of Ramandan approaches. The Grand Mufti of Liberia, Sheikh Aboubacar M.D. Soumawolo has announced that the Muslims’ Holy Month will commence on Monday, August 10, 2010 since the preceding Shaiban Month is expected to end on Sunday, the day before. Since the lunar calendar is many times debated, the Grand Mufti said “if we do not see the crescent, then we will have to begin the fast on the 11th of August, 2010 which will be on Tuesday.” Speaking to this paper, the Islamic Cleric made these remarks “Bissimilahi Rahman Rahim! According to the reports that have been confirmed by the scholars within the Republic of Liberia, Monday, August 9, will be the 29th of Shaiban. Shaiban is the month Ramandan can be next to (it). If the moon be sighted (seen) on the Monday, August 9, then the 10th of August will the Ramandan. If the crescent or moon cannot be sighted (seen), then the 11th of August will the first of Ramandan.” At the time, the Grand Mufti of the Republic of Liberia has called on Muslims to help in the process of authenticating the counting of remaining days of Shaiban. “While we are announcing the information, we urge all Muslims in the Republic of Liberia to supply us with any information about the month (moon); the new crescent of the Ramandan or any other relevant counting of the month of Shaiban. Thank you!” Ramandan, according to Islamic literatures, is one of the obligatory pillars of Islam. With a Testimonial that “there is none worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad is his last and seal of all Messengers as its first and cardinal of all pillars, and the observance of obligatory five times daily prayers, Ramandan is the third pillar of Islam. During the Holy of Ramandan, Muslims the world over fast from dawn to dusk and abstain in an uncompromised fashion from all worldly vanities such as illicit sex, food during fast times, profanity and obscenity. Also during the last ten days of this holy period, Muslims spend all nights in their respective places of worship to besiege the pardon and forgiveness, guidance, protection and direction from their creator, Allah. Muslims, as per religious rituals, conclude this holy period by extending alms to the needy of the society and congregate to officially end the month with prayers. |
