Min. Woods Envisages Better Liberia

17 August, 2010
Many are still ambivalent about the prospect of Liberia amid endemic culture of corruption which has undermined its development, regime after regime while most of its citizens are living in the pain of destitution. While there are those who think the country will remain caught in the throes of backwardness due to graft, there are others who think Liberia has already improved under the presidency of Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and is on an irreversible path of progress.
One such patriotic Liberian is veteran Human Rights advocate; Attorney Samuel Kofi Woods who visualizes Liberia to be a better place in spite of its current status which critics believe is characterized by raging corruption, unemployment underdevelopment, social injustice and lack of reconciliation amongst others.
Woods noted that people in Liberia have the tendency of forgetting too soon and ignoring the role institutions and individuals have played in history, urging that “and for many persons who might just forget history, this must be a constant reminder of institutions and individuals who continue to work for peace in Liberia”

The long time human rights defender, who many consider as a critical voice amongst civil society leaders, spoke over the weekend when he cut the ribbon for the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) offices in Sinkor.
Woods who serves as a Minister of Public Works under the current political regime asserted that WANEP remains a testament to peace which all Liberians must cherish and consolidate, while at the same time congratulating those he noted are keeping the spirit of advocacy in the civil society.
The Public Works boss who is reportedly making significant progress at the ministry has been earmarked by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as her running mate in the 2011 presidential race according to media reports.
He said if Liberians are constantly reminded about their history “where we come from and where we want to go, Liberia would a better place”.

Political analysts believe that President Sirleaf would make a prudent decision if she considers Woods as a running mate, because according to them, Kofi Woods, as a fearless human rights advocate during and after the dictatorial regime of Charles Taylor is still respected amongst civil society organizations and could use his influence for the victory of the ruling Party which critics believe would have tough time to win in the election.
For her part, the National Coordinator of the Network, Lindora H. Diawara said, they were very glad for the official opening of WANEP’s new offices, which according to her was an indication that the Liberia Charter of the Network has grown over the years in spite of difficult times they have endured.

Madam Diawara recalled that for more than 10 years WANEP was provided office space by one of its partners, Christian Health Association of Liberia (CHAL) and expressed gratitude to the organization for such gesture.
Even though, the new offices are being rented, but plans are reportedly underway to construct their own offices that would contain other components including playing grounds amongst.

Meanwhile, officials of the Liberia Charter expressed their gratitude to those individuals and institutions that made it possible including Public Works Minister Kofi Woods and WANET Region office in Ghana for the relocation of the organization at Cheeseman Avenue, 19th Street, Sinkor. The occasion was also graced by other prominent civil society leaders.
