Imam Dukuly Makes History in Minnesota
By: M.Nations’ staff writer
09 August, 2010
For the first time ever for an Imam to give an invocation of Liberia Independence Day celebration was on July 31, 2010, when the Organization of Liberians in Minnesota (OLM) invited Imam Mohammed Dukuly to offer prayer (invocation) for the independence program. Imam Dukuly who carefully selected sura Al ‘Imram ( the family of Imran), charter 103 -105, a verse of the Holy Koran, which talks about  unity and coexistence of diverse people for the sake of community empowerment. He recited the verse in Arabic and translated it in English as he went along. And finally, he asked the audience to rise; straightly in English he prayed for Liberia and its people, and also Liberians in Minnesota, particularly the leadership of OLM.

This powerful payer inspired many in the jam parked hall, to hear a Muslim very much articulate a food for thought in his payer like Imam Dukuly.  The orator, who was a Jewish, was highly touched so much so that she had to find space in her speech to comment on Imam Dukuly’s Prayer. At the end of her oration, she turned around to the platform guests, where Imam Dukuly was seated and said: “Assalamu alaykum’’, and there was a lour echo answer, “Waalayku salam”. It was a very emotional scene indeed.

This is something that has never been done in any Liberia’s Independence Day program, not even in mother Liberia. President upon president has come and gone, no one has thought of being so inclusive or tolerance of other religions, particularly the Islamic faith. This is a country with approximately 20 % of its population is Muslim. But yet Minnesota has done and on record for that.

Some attribute that to the presence of Bangalee Trawally, a Muslim and member of the Board of Directors of OLM. Whether that was the case or not, one can trace Trawally’s track records as an advocate for social justice. Months ago, he wrote President Ellen Johnson- Sirleaf an open letter asking for justice for his people in Nimba County. And of late, he was heard asking for an inter-faith mediation committee in Minnesota to resolve conflicts in the Liberian community if need be, instead of just the Christian clergy men doing so.
