PART THREE: FASTING THE MONTH OF RAMADAN
By: Sheikh Mohammed Kanneh
28 August, 2010
IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICENT, THE MERCIFUL

INTRODUCTION:

All praise is due to Allah who has presented us with Laylatul-Qadr (the Night of power) This night is greater than a thousand months and is the most meritorious in the periods of time. He has prescribed for us seclusion in the houses of the Allah. I testify that there is no God but Allah alone who has no partner, I testify that our master and leader Muhammad (PBUH), His servant and prophet. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, his family and his companions who were the masters of people of faith and knowledge.

Brothers and Sisters in Islam,

Assallaam Alaikum warrahmatullaahi wabarrakaatuhu

The last ten days of Ramadan is here, This is the time for Seclusion in the mosque and the time to seek the Night of power to obtain reward and the pleasure of Allah, Aisha (The wife of the Prophet Muhammad) said:" when the last ten days (of Ramadan) would come, the Prophet (PBUH) would spend the night in worship, wake his family (at night), exert himself and tighten his  waist cloth" . Al-Bukharee and Muslim

As a proof of our commitment to our belief in these last ten days of Ramadan , we have a special understanding of the virtue of " these days " over any other (set of days), in which one should increase obedience and acts of worship, such as prayer, making  (remembrance) and reciting the Quran.

These ten days are the last part of the month and a person's actions are based on his last ones. So perhaps, Intensifying Prayer and good deeds is encouraged so that the worshiper will encounter the night of Power while standing in prayer for Allah and thus have all his past sins forgiven.

So, Brothers and Sisters in Islam let's strive to characterize ourselves with these attributes. And guard the prayer we make in the depths of the night with the Imams in addition to the ones we pray in the early parts of the night, so that our exertion in these last ten days may go beyond that of the first and second ten days. And so that we may achieve the attribute of “spending the night in worship" by praying.

And we must be patient in our obedience to Allah, for indeed, the night prayer is difficult, but its reward is great. By Allah, it is a great opportunity in ones life and a profitable thing to take advantage of, for the one whom Allah grant it to. And a person does not know if perhaps he will encounter one of Allah's many rewards during the night prayer, thus serving as assistance for him in the world and in the Hereafter.

There are two struggles of the soul that the Muslim faces during Ramadan; the struggle by day with fasting and the struggle by night with night prayer. So whosoever combines these two and fulfills their rights, then he is amongst the patient, those who will “be given their reward in full without any reckoning.” Al- Qur'an surat-uz-Zumar:15

And one must incite, animate and persuade his family to perform acts of worship, especially in these great times in which no one neglects it except that he has been deprives. What is more incredible than this is that the people are performing prayers and making tahajjud, some individuals spend their time in forbidden gatherings and sinful events!! This is indeed the greatest loss. We ask Allah for his protection.

Therefore, embarking on these last ten days means entering into the profiting from righteous deeds in what remain of the month. One of the unfortunate matters is to see that some people excel in righteous actions, such as prayer and recitation of Quran, in the first part of the month, but then signs of fatigue begin to show on them after wards, especially when the last ten days of Ramadan come in. And this is in spite of these last ten days possessing a greater standing than the first and the second ones, thus, one must persevere in striving and struggling and increase his worship when the end of the month draws near. And we must keep in mind that a person's actions are based on his last ones.

LAYLATUL- QADR (NIGHT OF POWER)

Allah said in the holy Qur’an: “Verily, We have sent it (the Quran) down in the night of Power, and what will make you know what the night of Power is? The night of Power is better than a thousand months, Therein descend the angels and the Jibreel by their lord's permission with all decrees, (All that night) there is peace, until the appearance of dawn. " Surat-ul-Qadr :1

Laylatul-Qadr is the most blessed night, it possesses much good and blessing due to its merit and the great reward that awaits the one who does good deeds in it, among its blessings, is that Allah revealed the Qur'an in it.

A person who misses it has indeed missed a great amount of good. If a believing person is zealous to obey his lord and increase the good deeds in his record, he should strive to encounter this night and to pass it in worship and obedience, if this is facilitated for him, all of his previous sins will be forgiven.

Muslims are recommended to perform a long standing in prayer during the nights of which Laylatul-Qadr could fall. It is also recommended to make extensive supplication on this night.  Aisha reported that she asked Allah's Messenger Muhammad (PBUH), " O Messenger of Allah If I knew which night is Laylatul-Qadr, what should I say during it?" And he instructed her to say:

Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul'afwa fa'fu'annee

meaning : O Allah! You are forgiving, and you love forgiveness, so forgive me "

{ Reported by Ahmad, Ibn Majah. and at-Tirmidhi. Verified to be authentic by Al-Albaanee}.

We have come to the end of Part three of “Fasting the month of Ramadan”. We promise to furnish our valuable readers with detail of Zakat & Eidul-Fitr before the end of Ramadan Inshaa-Allahu.

Let’s pray
I seek refuge with Allah from Satan the cursed one.

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds; Most Gracious, Most Merciful; Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone we do worship, and you alone we do ask for help. Show us the straight path, the path of those on whom you have bestowed your grace, those whose portion is not wrath, and who do not go astray.

Wassalaam
