Ellen Invited to Islam as She Donates
to Muslims Courtesy: Public Agenda 19 August, 2010 The
Grand Mufti of the Republic of Liberia, Sheikh Abubakar M.D. Soumaorro,
has invoked the blessings and protection of Allah on Liberia and the
president of the Republic. Sheikh Abubakar was receiving the gifts of 30
bags of rice which the president sent as breakfast for Muslims at the
Gurley Street Mosque in central Monrovia. In what can be described a show of solidarity with fasting Muslims, the president Her Excellency Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Monday afternoon dispatched a team to Gurley street mosque headed by the Deputy Presidential Affairs Minister, Varney Sirleaf. Minister Sirleaf and delegation brought 30 bags of parboiled rice as the president’s donation to the fasting Muslims in the Holy Month of Ramadan. In presenting the gifts on behalf of the president to the Imam of Gurley Street Mosque and Grand Mufti of Liberia, Sheikh Abubakar, Minister Sirleaf said the president was presenting the rice purposely for Muslims who were fasting, so that they will use it for their breakfast. He made specific reference to the fasting Muslims saying that there are Muslims who are not fasting. The Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abubakar, in receiving the gift from the president, thanked the Liberian leader for the good gesture she has demonstrated towards the Muslims in this holy month of Ramadan when Muslims are observing the fast. He prayed to Allah for the peace, stability and progress of Liberia as well as for the success of the president in her endeavors to deliver the goods for the country. Meanwhile, the Grand Mufti of Liberia was overjoyed with the donation that he used the occasion to invite President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to join Islam. He included her invitation to Islam when he openly prayed to Allah for the “Mother of the nation” to become a Muslim. Quizzed about the rationale behind his praying for the President to embrace Islam, the Mufti said that Muslims are responsible to preach Islam to all non-Muslims, regardless of their class or status in life. He said all human beings are equal before Allah in their rights, duty, obligation, reward and punishment. He said both the governors and the subjects will return to Allah individually as they came from cradle and only accompanied with their deeds. He said Prophet Muhammad (PBH) invited many kings and rulers to Islam through written communications or letters and that it was the duty of Muslim propagators to emulate that example of their prophet and invite all to Allah, including kings, presidents or leaders. When pressed further, Public Agenda was made to skim through the “Atlas on the Prophet’s Biography,” pages 179-198 of which contains the list of kings to whom the prophet sent invitation letters to calling to them Islam. They include The Negus, king of Abyssinia (now Ethiopia); Chosroes of Persia (now Iran); Hercules, Caesar of the Roman Empire in Jerusalem; Al-Muqawqis, the ruler of Egypt amongst others. According to the Atlas, the prophet’s letters were brief and the text was as follows: ‘In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Muhammad the Messenger of Allah, to Heraclius the ruler of Rome (Byzantium). Peace be upon those who follow true guidance. I invite you to the call of Islam. Become Muslim and you will be safe, and Allah will give you a tow-fold double reward, but if you turn away then the sins of the arisiyyin (peasants) will be upon you.’ “O people of the scripture (Jews and Christians): come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allah (Alone), and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allah. Then if they turn away, say: Bear witness that we are Muslims.” [Qur’an 3:64] According to the Atlas, the ruler of Byzantium, Heraclius and of Egypt, Al Muqawqis treated the letter with respect and acknowledged the truthfulness of Muhammad’s claim. Heraclius is reported to have told the prophet’s messenger: By Allah, I know that your companion is a prophet who has been sent, and that he is the one for whom we are waiting, and we find him in our Scripture, but I fear what the Byzantines will do to me. Were it not for that, I would have followed him. As for the ruler of Egypt, the Biography book said he treated the messenger of the prophet with respect and admitted that he knew there was still a prophet to come, but that he thought that the prophet would appear in Syria. He reportedly sent plenty gifts to the prophet. |
