Jilted Lover Sets House Ablaze

COUNTY, Police in Ganta, Nimba County, have launched a manhunt for a
jilted lover, who allegedly went on the rampage for suspecting his
girlfriend of having an affair with another man. The jilted lover is
said to have set ablaze a six-room rented house of his girlfriend in
Gbatue Quarter in Ganta. The incident which occurred on Tuesday, July
28, 2009 at dawn resulted in loss of cash and personal belongings of
over 20 occupants of the building.The suspect, who police say had gone into hiding after the alleged arson, has only been identified as Opee. Opee is said to be one of the street gas sellers in Ganta. The suspect, according to the story, earlier had a fist fight with his estranged lover's boyfriend identified as Wesley Paymein. The lady in the center of the incident was also identified as Mamie Gbatue, 24. One of the affected occupants of the burnt house, Helener Gontee, 33, told the Daily Observer on Tuesday, July 27, 2009, that on the night of Sunday, July 26, Opee and Mamie's 'serious lover', Wesley Paymein, had a fist fight after Paymein had suspected him (Opee) of having an affair with Mamie. During the fight, one account said, Opee suffered at the hands of Paymeine, but he (Opee) returned overnight with some of his (Opee) friends, who were reportedly brandishing cutlasses and other deadly objects with the aim of avenging Opee's earlier subjugation during the fist fight. Opee's friends was aborted through the intervention of an elderly person who lived in the neighborhood, according to reliable sources. Another version of the story has it that Opee's anger persisted and finally resulted in the alleged arson. He was reportedly to have attacked the house after wasting gasoline around the building and later lit a match that resulted in the razing of the house into ashes, while most of the occupants were far asleep. No casualty has been reported. Meanwhile, Mamie who has been arrested by police is reportedly assisting with investigations. She told the Daily Observer at the Ganta Police Detachment that the situation was 'regrettable'. |
