New Police Chief Vows Sweeping
Changes Courtesy: Liberian Observer August 01, 2009 The
new Director of Liberia National Police (LNP), Marc Amblard, yesterday
took office with a vow to institute meaningful and sweeping changes in
the LNP. Mr. Amblard, who has just been confirmed by the Senate upon his
nomination to the post by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, declared at
the occasion: “We are going to see some changes here. I will welcome
inputs from everybody. I don't have the key to everything or the answer
to every question. I look forward to your input and your support.
Ultimately I will make the decisions but it will be in the best interest
of LNP.”He officially took office yesterday, July 28, 2009, at a well-attended and colorful ceremony on Capitol Hill, Monrovia. Mr. Amblard did not state specifically the kinds of changes he would effect. He, however, called on the officers for their cooperation and support. He also cautioned that there will be no compromise with LNP officers who fail to perform their duties. “Let me reassure you that if you can't fulfill your part of the bargain, I will be forced to fulfill mine,” he noted. Justice Minister Cllr. Christiana Tah, who also attended the ceremony yesterday, urged the police to expect a positive transformation, continuing from where Madam Beatrice M. Browne, the former Police Director, stopped. The Justice Minister also pointed out that there would be 'a cross-examination in every area of the police department.' “We will make sure that everyone on police payroll is indeed working. We have to gain the respect that comes with law enforcement. We have to gain mutual respect as police officers. That is the only way we can work effectively,” she noted. Cllr. Tah, who is also a veteran Professor of Sociology, called on the LNP to strengthen community policing, saying, “It is the best means of reducing crimes in our communities.” Speaking at the ceremony, the former Police Director Madam Beatrice Munah Sieh Browne said she was glad to hand over to the new Police Director Amblard, saying Liberia cannot be developed by one person. According to her, she was also grateful for the opportunity afforded her by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to serve the LNP and the country as a whole. Madam Muna-Browne also thanked police authorities and officers for the cooperation and support given her during her administration. |
