“Many Checkpoints Hampering Economic
Development”…Planning Minister Expresses Concern Courtesy: Inquirer 01 April, 2010 The
Minister of Planning and Economic Affairs, Amara Konneh on Tuesday
stated that the 'too many' checkpoints along the highways are impeding
the economic growth in the country.Minister Konneh, who spoke to a team
of reporters in Monrovia, said as a result of these checkpoints,
marketers find it difficult transporting their goods from one end to the
next due to the constant harassment from those assigned at those
checkpoints. The Planning Minister further stated that if the rights of
the marketers are not protected, the goal of Government to eradicate
poverty and life, Liberia may not be achieved. At the same time, a
day-long forum on Liberia's Economic Growth Corridor: Economic
Development beyond the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) ended on Tuesday
in Monrovia. The Forum brought together several government Ministries and Agencies as well Government's implementing partners. Minister Konneh explained that the government, through his institution has released a report on Liberia's vision for accelerating the economic growth. He said the report is in further support to lift Liberia's program. According to him, there are five corridors in the country where economic activities are concentrated; four radiating out along pave roads and one along the Bong railway, all from the central pole, connecting Voinjamia and Foya, Lofa County and in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, Greenville, Sinoe County and Harper, Maryland County, in the east to Monrovia-Ganta Road. He said there are 200 markets in the country, some of which are opened on a daily basis, while others open weekly. The Minister explained that the document highlights the county's development corridors and shows how mining projects are due to come over the next six years and will add or extend three corridors. Minister Konneh further stated that the report contributes to the government's Poverty Reduction strategy (PRS) by analyzing the national economic geography and showing how Liberia could create development corridors where diversified investment synergies can accelerate growth and reduce poverty. He said the development corridor strategy will allow growth to accelerate by 'crowding in' investment, creating synergies among diverse activities along growth where users can share roads, railways, ports-sea and air-power telecommunications and water infrastructure.According to Minister Konneh, his institution has already taken leadership of the development corridor process and they plan to work closely with all relevant Ministries, which will be represented on a central steering committee. |
