Changing Perspective -Ministry of Public Works Makes headway in curbing Theft
By: Jesefu Morris Keita, Jr.
06 April, 2010

In continuation of its reform agenda, the Ministry of Public Works through its Security Division for the past few months has engaged in positive security maneuvering in an attempt to protect the agency’s assets and products from theft by unscrupulous individuals both internally and externally.

Speaking to journalists during the week when he turned over retrieved fuel and a generator to the Ministry’s Procurement Division, the Director of Security, Alexander K. Tweh cautioned staffs of the logistics section to institute follow-up measures meant to ensure that supplies are properly use to carry out the agency’s work instead of being diverted to personal use.

He said under the current administration, there is absolutely no room for the misapplication and theft of items intended to enhance the on-going construction and rehabilitation of roads and bridges. He therefore warned employees and would-be criminals to desist from engaging in fraudulent activities including the sales of fuel, equipment among others as they will be caught and forwarded to law enforcement authorities. “Since coming to office, this administration has taken quick and appropriate actions to ensure the safety of our Ministry” said Director Tweh.

According to Tweh, since December 2009 the MPW securities have been able to seize (229) gallons of fuel oil and 5-Kva generator. He said that, this was the security Division own way of promoting the administration of Minister Samuel kofi Woods and the government of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Tweh further noted that some of the criminals were not employees of the ministry but managed to beat their way through the system due to accomplice in the employ of the ministry. He added that, some accomplice employees have been dismissed, others suspended for time indefinite, with the rest taken to the Liberia National Police for onward investigation.

Speaking of transparency and accountability, it has been reported that sizable quantity of balances of materials that were supplied to the engineering teams nation-wide are being returned to base after each project is completed. The report cites many projects including Senji and Nyanforla Bridges.
The Ministry of Public Works supplies system is now tightly controlled and monitored, making it difficult for criminals and other bad elements in society to make away with operational materials and products. Director Tweh assured authorities of the Ministry that he and his outfit will continue to work closely with law enforcement authorities, procurement personnel, and internal auditors, to maintain the integrity of the product supply chain.

It can be recalled that stealing and other forms of corruption occurred during the building of the Jallah Town road, which caused the work to become substandard and brought the downfall of the previous administration. Minister Woods is leaving no stone unturned in making sure that his administration performs to the expectation of the Liberian people and nation.
Meanwhile, the Ministry Public Works Security Division is asking for the public’s help in reporting any information regarding any fraudulent act such as the illegal sale of fuel by calling (024200147) or by visiting the Security Division, Ministry of Public Works.
