Problem Hits Liberians In Europe
Courtesy: Public Agenda
11 April, 2010
European hunt for illegal immigrants mostly target Africans who pour there in droves seeking greener pastures from their conflicts ridden, hardships laden and poverty stricken continent. The hunt sometimes leads to detention and subsequent deportation. As our staff reports, impersonators claiming Liberian identity have caused suspicion in which our government is must intervene.
Information gathered by this paper has revealed that serious identity crisis has hit the Liberian Communities in Europe, with three separate European Countries questioning the legality of over 500 Liberians residing in Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands. In a two counts tip-off to the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization (BIN) of Liberia, Governments of the three European nations are claiming that Liberians residing in the various countries are undocumented, while some have overstayed their visits in these states. According to the information, the Federal Republic of Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands have described the over stay of Liberians in their countries as illegal. They have separately invited authorities of the BIN to their countries to help in dealing with other individuals who are said to be claiming Liberian citizenship.

The information also disclosed that the Commissioner of BIN Col. Chris Massaquoi, at the head of a 4-man delegation, has arrived from Europe where he and delegation had gone to help verify claims made by the European Countries. The team that traveled to Europe comprised of Cllr. Abla G. Williams, Commissioner for Naturalization, Col. Lamine Swaray, Assistance to BIN Commissioner and Maj. Lucia Tarpeh of the BIN detail at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Our source also maintained that while in Europe, issues relating to the over-stayed and undocumented Liberians residing in the three countries, as well as those individuals claiming Liberian citizenship were discussed.
In a related development, the delegation also met her counterparts in the three countries and discussed assistance in capacity building and cooperation with the BIN in line with the Bureau’s strategic development plan which was sponsored by the British government.

Europe has been losing its war on illegal immigration. According to various European Union (EU) estimates, around half a million illegal immigrants still enter the European Union annually, even after years of measures that have included policing, detention, and repatriation. To achieve widespread and lasting change, the European Union must address the reasons why many illegal immigrants leave their homes in Africa for what they perceive as a better life in Europe. In recent talks with their counterparts from African nations, EU ministers have now offered substantial development aid as part of a package to curb illegal immigration. Though the intention of their plan is fundamentally correct, several aspects of the plan, if not addressed soon, may stand in the way of curbing Europe's illegal immigration problem.

In July 2006, EU Ministers and African leaders met at the Ministerial Euro-African Conference on Migration and Development held in Rabat, Morocco. European ministers adopted an action plan that included development aid, to dissuade illegal migrants who wanted to leave Africa. The European Union pledged 18 billion Euros (approximately US$23 billion) to African source and transit countries over a seven-year period. This money will be used to institute development and poverty-alleviation measures. The ministers also discussed creating avenues for legal migration.

Some approaches such as stemming illegal inflow by humane methods of policing, judicial cooperation, and assistance for illegal migrants, were discussed anew, with a view toward greater intercontinental cooperation.
Perceptive observers also remark that illegal immigrations into the West can be curbed only by multiple steps, which the European or Western countries must include in their plans. They need to strengthen the forces that are fighting against official corruption, injustice and oppressions, which push the unfortunates Africans into abject poverty, thus forcing them to flee their beloved homes and dear relatives. They say that the sooner Europeans close all the lope holes against mafia and vampire African leaders, and stop them from siphoning into personal accounts in European or Western banks, the badly needed earnings, the better the condition of Africa will become.

Despite all of the measures put into place by Europe, many Africans, including Liberians seeking greener pasture, are still being booked living illegally in that part of the world. With the latest development regarding the 500 Liberians, it is not yet clear as to whether they would face deportation or repartition to their home land, as the BIN boss has reserved comments on the matter.
