Muslim Council Elects Officials …Kafumba Konneh Retains Chairmanship

The National Muslim Council of Liberia yesterday elected its corps of officials in a day long election that brought Muslim organizations from across the country to participate. The newly elected National Chairman for the Council, Sheikh Kafumba F. Konneh told reporters after his victory that this national election was different because Muslims and Muslim organizations from across the country participated in the process.He continued that as the newly elected Chairman, he plans to bring Muslims together to promote the teachings of Allah and to live peacefully with other religions.He also praised the national Muslim Council Election Commission for having a free, fair and transparent election.

Speaking also to reporters, the Chairman of the Ad-hoc Elections Commission, Mohammed Osman Kannah said that other elections that took place in the past had not been as transparent and democratic as yesterday's.The Election Commissioner added that a Peace Community set up had unified the two Muslim councils in that yesterday's election was one of inclusion.Yesterday's election brought together twenty-six Muslim organizations and associate organizations that sent some one hundred and fifty-three voters from across the country.The election was also witnessed by observers from different religious backgrounds and from the National Elections Commission to enable the Muslim Council Election to run smoothly and fairly.Also speaking, the newly elected Grand Mufti for the National Muslim Council, Sheikh Abubacar Sumaworo of the Liberia Muslim Congress said that now Muslims in Liberia have come together.

Sheikh Sumaworo continued that the election is not the end and those who have been elected must discharge their responsibilities and not only concentrate on those who voted for them but work for all Muslims.Those elected yesterday were: Sheikh Kafumba F. Konneh, Chairman, Sheikh Omaru A. Kamara, 1st Vice Chairman, Fomba K. Sheriff, 2nd Vice Chairman, Sheikh Akibu Sheriff, Secretary General, Sheikh Mohammed Dolley, Deputy Secretary General, Sheikh Amandu Golayen, Assistant Secretary General, Sheikh Abubacar Sumaworo, Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdullah A. Kromah, Deputy Grand Mufti, and Alhaji Mohammed V. Saryon and Sheikh Al-Hassan A. Kamara tied for Assistant Grand Mufti, Alhaji Murphy Dolleh, National Treasurer, Sheikh Oumaru Konate, Deputy National Treasurer, D.P. Musa Donzo, Assistant National Treasurer, and Counselor Fomba Sheriff, Legal Counsel.For the position of Assistant Grand Mufti, the two candidates that tied in the election will go through a run-off election in two weeks.
