Ethnic Tension Breeds in Maryland Courtesy: Public Agenda 19 April, 2010 Ethnic
tension is said to be looming in Maryland County, an area that is
already rocked by ritualistic killings Justice Minister Christina Tah
since some senior citizens of the county were charged with murder for
their role in the death of several persons in the county. But the former Circuit Judge of the county, Cllr. Fulton Yancy, who was charged for murder, has been released on bail while President Ellen-Jophnson Sirleaf's Special Envoy Mr. Dan Morias was set freed for what the court calls lack of sufficient evidence to try the accused persons. Until his release, Mr. Morias, a former superintendent of ex-president Charles Taylor, was charged separately with four counts. Six others accused alongside Mr. Morias and Cllr. Yancy are still being detained in the Harper Central Prison with an uncertain fate. Our correspondent say three of the four districts have accused Harper District of witch-haunting, because it is only that district that has the history of ritualistic killings in Maryland. Our source says this is breeding tension amongst citizens of Harper District and citizens of the other three districts. He said citizens are murmuring in street corners threatening reprisal if a resident from their district was killed for rituals. "I hear threats in street corners everywhere. Some of them are threatening to settle scores this time around whenever a resident of their district is missing" our correspondent said. It can be recalled that several human parts were also discovered in the home of Cllr. Foulton by traditional doctor, following a search in his home. The former Circuit Court Judge is a member of government’s prosecution team in Maryland. Following the news of insecurity in the county, security personnel were deployed for fears that gripped the county after the arrest and detention of the accused. At a press conference two weeks ago, described the situation in HArper as “very serious" and promised that more security will be deployed in the county. "The people in the area believe that the suspect who are in jail are in fact involved and want them tried in a court of law and so I had to spend sometimes educating on how the system works" the justice Minister said. |
