Egypt Gives Scholarships To Liberia Courtesy: Public Agenda 20 April, 2010 The
Egyptian Ambassador accredited to Liberia, His Excellency Ahmed Fadel
Yakoub, disclosed today that his government has recently offered more
Scholarships & training programs to the Ministries of Agriculture,
Health & Social Welfare, Foreign Affairs, Education, Defense, Liberia
Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission( LRRRC) as well as the
Press Union of Liberia (PUL). He said the gesture was in the light of the excellent relations existing between the Governments and peoples of the two countries, and a continuation of Egypt’s technical and bilateral assistance to improve the overall manpower development of Liberia. To help mitigate the huge capacity challenge of the media in Liberia, the Ambassador said his government, in collaboration with the African Union of Journalists, awarded a space to a young Liberian Journalist to participate in the 35th Training Course for young African Journalists in Cairo, Egypt, beginning May 8, 2010. He confirmed that the Press Union of Liberia has forwarded two nominees for consideration: Journalists Festus Poquie of the New Democrat Newspaper and D. Kaihenneh Sengbeh of the Informer Newspaper. Other fields of study the scholarships cover include Peace-Building and Defense, which according to Ambassador Yakoub are intended for the Ministries of Foreign Affairs & Defense as well as to Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC). Officials of these entities are to receive intensive training in International Law & Refugee Law, at the Cairo Regional Center for Training on Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping in Africa (CCCPA), beginning 11thApril 2010. Three candidates have been accepted for this training program: Hon. Emmanuel Bowier, a career diplomat, former Minister of Information & presently a Media Consultant, Honorable Nicholas A. Perkins, Sr., Protection Officer, LRRRC, and First Lieutenant Jorel S. Toe, Deputy Assisting Chief of Staff for Training, AFL/HQ. They left Liberia for Cairo, Egypt on the 8th of April, 2010, to begin their training. The Egyptian Envoy said that the Cairo Regional Center for Conflict Resolution and Peace-keeping in Africa (CCCPA) has also extended an invitation to Prof T. Debey Sayndee, Director of Kofi Annan Institute of Conflict Transformation( KAICT), at the University of Liberia, to visit Cairo from 20th – 25th April 2010. While in Egypt, he is expected to establish a framework of Cooperation between CCCPA & KAICT and as well deliver a lecture on April 20th 2010 on the theme: “Peace Building in the Aftermath of Conflicts: the Case in Liberia.” Moreover, the ambassador said his Government presented a new training program to Liberia to enable a high ranking Army Officer in the restructured Armed Forces of Liberia to participate in the 19th Strategic Program for High Ranking African Military Officers Course at the Nasser Military Academy in Cairo, which is one of the most prestigious academies in the Middle East, beginning 2nd May 2010. The training program will enhance capabilities in topics relating to African Security & National Strategies, leadership tactics and strategies, educate participants to be able to predict and manage crisis and on the arts of war. On the yearly Scholarships package for Educational sector, Ambassador Yakoub declared that the Liberian Ministries of Foreign Affairs & Education have already been informed of the 12 New Scholarships made available by Egypt to Liberian students during the academic year 2010/2011 comprising the followings: 1: 5 Undergraduate Scholarships for study in the Social Sciences Faculties of Egyptian Universities. 2: 2 Undergraduate Scholarships to study Arabic Language in the Egyptian University. 3: 5 Undergraduate & Postgraduate Scholarships for study at the AL Azhar University. On the other hand, the Ambassador said that to help discover talented and creative Liberian children and encourage them to express their views about nature, people and life, the Egyptian National Centre for Child’s Culture has invited Liberian Children, through the Ministry of Education, to participate in two International Competitions in Hand Made Toy and Photography. The Ambassador further said that in the area of agriculture the following four new candidates have been accepted to commence their three-months training at the Egyptian International Centre for Agriculture in Cairo, Egypt (EICA): Messrs Anderson Preston and Jusus Mondeh Samuel are to be trained in Agricultural Services and they left Liberia a week ago for Egypt. Mr. Massaquoi Botoe and Mrs. Weedor Akoi will study Rice Cultivation for Africa, and will leave Liberia for EICA, Egypt, during the second half of April 2010. The Ambassador further declared that the Egyptian Government also presented two more training programs to the Ministry of Health & Social Welfare to enable top level and leading Liberian Medical Practitioners or Nurses working in government hospitals to attend and participate in Sub Fertility and Reproductive Endocrinology and Assisted Conception Courses and Safe Motherhood Training Program for African Doctors at the Suzanne Mubarak Regional Centre for Women’s Health and Development (SMC) in Alexandria, Egypt, beginning 26th April 2010. He added that Egypt is keen to assist in improving the Liberian health sector and that these training programs are designed to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes of medical practitioners to enable them to provide care to women throughout child bearing cycle with the ultimate goal of ensuring and achieving safe motherhood. At the end of this training program, he said participant doctors will be able to identify high risk pregnancy, perform proper antenatal care, provide proper clean safe delivery, care of the breast and care for the newborn. In the area of Diplomacy, the Ambassador explained that over the years his government has been involved in supporting the Liberian diplomatic sector, and to maintain and expand this cooperation in a broader perspective, an invitation has been extended to His Excellency Dr. Augustine Konneh, Director of the Liberia Foreign Service Institute, to visit the Egyptian Institute of Diplomatic Studies at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in Egypt at a convenient date. This visit, he stressed, will boost the cooperation between the Egyptian Institute of Diplomatic Studies and the Liberian Foreign Service Institute and a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions will be signed. On when the Diplomatic cooperation between the two countries started to take an upward trend, Ambassador Yakoub disclosed that in 2009 an Egyptian Diplomatic expert came to Liberia to help in restructuring the Liberian Foreign Service Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Few months before then, another Egyptian Diplomatic Expert came to Liberia to hold training sessions for over 100 Liberian young Diplomats at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the strategic areas of Diplomatic Protocol, Etiquette and Ceremonials. According to him, that was after 25 Liberian young Diplomats participated in intensive training programs at the Egyptian Institute of Diplomatic studies. |
